Overall Purpose

Perform mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance on school buses and white fleet vehicles. Possess knowledge of mechanical, electrical, air brake, diesel systems, gasoline engines, and air conditioner systems. Ensure safe operating condition and provide documentation meeting state, federal, and county requirements.

Essential Function

• Perform repairs on school buses, including diesel and gas engines.
• Diagnose, remove, inspect, and install vehicle parts for repairs.
• Proficiently repair air brakes, steering systems, electrical components, air conditioning systems, body parts, and tires.
• Conduct monthly inspections and provide maintenance services for our white fleet vehicles.
• Respond to on-the-road service calls for District vehicles.
• Ensure all school buses and white fleet vehicles are repaired as needed.
• Maintain proper fluid levels in equipment.
• Complete service reports and effectively manage parts inventory.
• Fabricate necessary equipment.
• Be available to respond to emergencies during and outside of regular work hours for safety concerns.
• Maintain on-call availability as required.
• Strong communication skills are essential, including the ability to effectively understand, interpret, and follow both verbal and written instructions

Education/Training

• Must have a high school diploma or GED required. 
• Must have three years of experience in diesel engine repair and or automotive repair.
• Must have a commercial driver’s license with passenger endorsement or the ability to obtain one within the first year.
• ASE certifications are preferred but unnecessary in diesel, heavy-duty, and automotive repair. However, they are advantageous.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to perform manual labor and meet all relevant physical requirements. The role requires physical strength, with the ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds of force frequently. The individual should be able to stand for long periods and perform various physical tasks such as stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and climbing to complete the necessary job duties for repairing county-owned vehicles.

Education/Training

• Must have a high school diploma or GED required.

• Must have a commercial driver’s license with passenger endorsement or the ability to obtain one within the first year.
• Automotive Service Excellence Certification in Heavy Truck, School Bus, and Paint and Body Work Preferred.
