Overall Purpose 

To provide support to the instructional process by serving as a teacher with specific responsibility for developing special education students' success in academics interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living; supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas. Develops lesson plans and delivers group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines.

  

Essential Functions

  • Uses a variety of instructional strategies at an appropriate instructional level for teaching students from diverse backgrounds with different learning styles and special needs.
  • Maintains appropriate student behavior in the classroom and out of the classroom by  monitoring behavior and intervenes when necessary.
  • Communicates high learning expectations for all students; assesses, monitors and encourages student progress.
  • Uses ongoing assessments to monitor student progress; interprets and uses data (including but not limited to standardized and other test results) for instructional planning and program evaluation.
  • Follows professional practices consistent with school and system policies in working with students, students’ records, parent and colleagues.
  • Provides accurate and timely information to parents and students about academic and behavioral performance of students; expectations; and developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in school and in the home environment by such means as holding conferences, telephoning and sending written communications.
  • Maintains lesson plans as required by school policy.
  • Develops, implements and completes all prescribed activities outlined in the Professional Development Plan annually in accordance with state and system requirements.
  • Maintains accurate complete and appropriate records and files reports promptly.
  • Acts in a professional and ethical manner and adheres to professional standards at all time.
  • Demonstrates accurate and up-to-date knowledge of content; keeps abreast of developments in instructional methodology, learning theory, curriculum trends and content; participates in a variety of meetings (Professional Learning Communities, etc.).
  • Creates or selects long-range plans and writes student’s annual IEP based on a review of system and state curriculum priorities, instructional priorities and student’s handicapping condition; revises plan/s based on student needs.

  • Actively participates in Special Olympics.    
  • Maintains confidentiality of students and other professional information.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. 

Requirements

Valid Georgia professional certification in the assigned teaching field. 

 

Physical Requirements

Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity.

Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing.

 

Education/Training

Maintains all licenses and certifications.
